Centrelink Community Teams (Prison Liaison Unit) usually visit the prisons and make payment arrangements with persons who are leaving prison. If this has not happened for you, when you are released go to Centrelink, lodge a claim for Crisis Payment AND a one-week advance of the income support payment you are eligible for. (eg Newstart, Disability Support Pension etc).
This must be done within 7 days of your release
If you lodge the claims after 7 days you will not be eligible for Crisis Payment and will not be able to get an advance on your usual payment.
Your Crisis Payment, and the advance on your usual payment will be paid as two separate payments by one of the following methods:
- EBT Cards (a separate card for each payment)
- Counter cheques (a separate cheque for each payment)
- Directly into your bank account. (2 payments will appear on your bank statement)
You can choose how you want the payments to be made.
Those payments will have to last for two weeks.
If you are to be released at the weekend:-
- Talk to your unit manager about contacting Centrelink prior to your release AND lodging your claim for Crisis Payment AND an advance on your normal payment.
- It may be possible to arrange for EBT cards sent to the prison.
TWO WEEKS LATER YOU SHOULD RECEIVE ONE WEEK'S PAYMENT OF YOUR BENEFIT
That payment will also have to last you for 2 weeks! If you are on Newstart or Youth allowance you must lodge your continuation forms to continue to receive payments.
TWO WEEKS LATER YOU SHOULD RECEIVE TWO WEEKS' PAYMENT AND CONTINUE TO RECEIVE PAYMENT EVERY TWO WEEKS AS LONG AS YOU REMAIN ELIGIBLE
