Good health is essential to wellbeing and a quality lifestyle. The Outcare Health Services is another area of Outcare’s holistic range of services and offers a comprehensive range of specialist treatment to help offenders, ex-offenders and their families make informed decisions about health issues.
Alcohol and Other Drugs Throughcare Counselling:
Pre and post –release counselling and group sessions for men and women re-entering the community from prison on parole conditions or finite.
Counselling is a process which allows you to talk about your feelings and concerns, regarding drug use and offending within a confidential and supportive environment with a qualified staff member thus helping you to make a clear and informed choice about your future options in life.
We encourage you to include your partner or family members after release to increase your support.
Mental Health:
It is recognised that a large proportion of people affected by drug and alcohol use also experience mental health problems.
It is important to speak to your Counsellor about any co-existing mental health issues. Outcare Counsellors can help you address both your drug and alcohol use and mental health problems or can access a relevant specialist service.
Blood-borne Viruses
The rates of blood-borne viruses such as Hepatitis B, Hepatitis C and HIV among people in prison are significantly higher than in the general community.
For example, it is estimated that about 30 to 40 per cent of all prisoners are infected with hepatitis C. This increases to between 50 and 70 per cent among female prisoners, compared to only one per cent in the general community.
• Support and education on prevention and treatment of blood-borne viruses
• Referral and linkages to appropriate services
• Sexual Health Education
• Assistance in accessing free, confidential blood testing
• Free Hepatitis B vaccinations
• Support and health education to maintain a healthy lifestyle for those undertaking Hepatitis C treatment.
Throughcare support for Aboriginal Men
The Men’s Healing Program provides individual ‘yarning’, group work pre and post prison and community support for Aboriginal Men to address issues connected to their drug and alcohol use and offending, in a culturally and spiritually appropriate way. This is a partnership program between Outcare and the Aboriginal Alcohol & Drug Service.
