Outcare Western Australia

One of the primary reasons that young people get in trouble with the law is a breakdown within the family.

With early intervention, these young people can turn their lives around and avoid spending time in jail as an adult.

Outcare’s Youth Services offers a range of assistance to help young people choose the right path.

Detention centre support
Outcare offers one-on-one support for young people at Rangeview Remand Centre and Banksia Detention Centre.

Our aim is to identify why the young person is in this situation.
If there has been a breakdown in communication with parents, Outcare’s staff can provide a mediation service.

They will also help the young person put together a support plan to help keep them on the right track upon release.

Release
Upon release from detention, young people often find themselves at a loose end.

If it is difficult for them to return to the family home because of conflict, Outcare will help them access crisis accommodation and negotiate with agencies that provide medium to long term accommodation in private rental properties.

We can help them get back into school, work or recreational pursuits and access their Centrelink entitlements.

Keeping kids out of crime

Keeping Kids Out Of Crime is an early intervention programme which aims to alert school students about the dangers of getting involved in criminal activity.  The speaker’s consistent aim is to deglamorise crime and to make the audience aware of the realities of such a life style.  The programme is sponsored by the City of Gosnells and the Office of Crime Prevention and is presented by Outcare Incorporated.

The primary concept of the Keeping Kids Out Of Crime program is “Education through Credibility”.  The education through credibility concept is built on a former long-term prisoner talking to students in the classroom about the realities of prison.  This will be done in a structured manner detailing why he offended, his school experience, the law, the parole system, how he survived in prison, how prison affected him, his experiences re-entering society, finding employment and being accepted by friends and family etc.

The sessions are structured to allow the presenter, through his own experiences, to highlight to students the decisions students make today might adversely affect their futures.  Particular emphasis is placed on the value of education and the limited choices available to those who opt of the system at an early age.  Students are also encouraged to build resources for themselves, family, friends, teachers, youth workers so that when they are faced with difficult choices they can then draw on them for help.

During his presentation the speaker covers the following:

  • Self respect
  • Respect for others
  • Respect for the community
  • Racism
  • Bullying

The speaker describes his life and the events that had an impact in his life.  His presentation demonstrates how a person can transform their lives through hard work, belief in one self and the realisation that we are all equal.  The speaker presents a harsh warning to young people of the possible results from offending behaviour.
