John’s story

The Client

John* is a young Aboriginal man initially referred to Outcare because of his ongoing offending behaviour. He is one of five siblings and while growing up had experienced both his parents being in prison. The family had ongoing domestic violence, drug and alcohol issues as well as frequent family conflict. His mother suffers from schizophrenia and depression.

The Programs

Staff at Outcare identified John’s needs as requiring support to access alternative accommodation, finding a steady job, some financial help, assistance with family conflict and mentoring. He and his family have now been supported by several Outcare programs, including Live Works, Reconnect, Drive Time and Aboriginal Throughcare.

The Result

Through the support of Live Works, John maintained regular attendance in the program, obtained his Certificate II in Building and Construction and he is now working in the construction industry. John has also obtained his Driver’s Licence, acquired stable accommodation, remained drug and crime free, and maintained a healthy connection with family and community.
